Abstract

Topiramate is an antiepileptic medication used in partial epilepsy seizures in adults and children, acting on the central nervous system (CNS) and bringing balance to neurological cells. The study is applicable to pediatric patients, where the beneficial effects of individualization are demonstrated, mainly because it is a weak enzyme inducer, as will be explained throughout this article. The manuscript aims to demonstrate the behavior of the drug topiramate when administered individually to children, taking into account pharmacogenetics that aims to understand the genetic variability of each individual with regard to specific medications, in addition to a succinct comparison with older antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) that are still used as first-line medications in the treatment of childhood partial epilepsy. The study was based on research carried out on the platforms: Google Scholar, PubMed and Scielo. In the search, words in English that correlated with the proposed theme were used and the selected articles had as selection criteria the number of times they were cited and the year of publication. After the searches, 32 articles were selected that formed the study in question, including articles related to partial childhood epilepsy, topiramate and pharmacogenetics. In short, it is understood that studies based on pharmacogenetics will be more widespread over the years, so that there can be increasingly personalized and individualized treatments for patients with epilepsy, especially among children.
